Concept for Pencil Sharpener Repurpose & Branding
about the project
Instakit & Pocket Habitat Project. The process of object analysis works to challenge the way a designer thinks about an object.
An object is not strictly related to its physical form, function, or characteristics. The object can represent ideas that a target audience can come to understand. When a designer can also convincingly communicate connection between seemingly unalike things, that designer's work can, through making use of semantics and iconography, inform strong strategic messaging.
By first understanding the object, and then expanding on its direct meaning, I was able to explore new ways of thinking in my process as a designer. For ten weeks, I worked with a pencil sharpener as my object, and created the below Instakit grid system, and repurposed the pencil sharpener object as a new product. I branded the product as the Pocket Habitat, derived from research and connection synthesis.
